Is there a secret to success?

Starting with today’s entry I will be sharing my answers to questions submitted to my “Ask The Coach” column in a local business journal. The irony of this is that effective coaching is built on asking the right questions, rather than answering them. However, my “Ask The Coach” entries seem to have been effective “primers”, helping people begin to see problems and questions in new and helpful ways. For some, they begin to understand how professional coaching services can have a profound effect in their work and lives. I hope you find these entries helpful, too.

Today’s Question: Is there a secret to success?

Have you truly defined success? Is it your own definition – or what the “world” expects of you? Successful people set their own goals considering what others say but deciding on what they want to do with their lives. Another common difference between “successful” and unsuccessful people is that unsuccessful people prioritize their schedules and successful people schedule their priorities. Of course, the “secret” lies in truly knowing your priorities. Better yet, the secret is being clear about your priorities – where you are now, what you deeply desire to have, do and become.

You exist to serve. The secret to success begins with getting clear on who and how you serve.

What is of greatest importance to you right now? Every moment you spend trying to remember what is important can cost you time, money and emotional energy. So successful people clarify what success looks like, feels like, and sounds like in their own terms. Their priorities are stabilized by balance among them and purified by strong beliefs that support them. They make decisions and act daily based on their own predetermined goals, which creates direction and ultimately a unique sense of purpose. Clarity leads to commitment, and commitment leads to satisfaction, peace of mind, creativity, pleasure, powerful relationships, wealth…or however you want to define your own success. You exist to serve. The secret to success begins with getting clear on who and how you serve.

Networked and Inspired!

Networking. It has become one of the most recognized terms, if not expectations, in contemporary business and social life. Indeed, it can be a powerful means of growing a business, growing personally and professionally, and developing socially. But how do I find the right ‘network’ that works for me, brings out my best, allows me to add value to the world around me and one that serves me well, too? I have searched and experimented, gained a bunch and wasted some time and money as well. Read on, because I’ve found what I’m looking for and maybe I can help you.

I have done the BNI thing (Business Networking International). You know, meet once a week with other business people, learn about their business and what makes a good referral for them, give them quality and quantity in referrals, and they will bless you in kind. But what about those people who in the group for whom you don’t seem to find the right kind of referrals? Worse, what about those people who somehow got into your group and you simply cannot recommend or even trust? And I can’t miss weekly meetings, or I must send a substitute, yet I am a sole proprietor with a growing business? The model doesn’t work – for very long.

I have done the good old fashioned networking group. In fact, I’ve been involved with one for more than 17 years. These are people I trust and admire. We advise each other, care for each other, look forward to each other’s company. Yet I wanted something more.

I explored several avenues. I even entertained the concept of starting a series of ‘speed-networking’ events to reach far if not deep into a new netork.

Fortunately, before I invested too much time or money launching a speed-networking venture I got Inspired! I am fortunate to live in Central Illinois, in Decatur specifically, within about 50 minutes of several cities of 100,000+ population including Springfield, the state capital. I met a guy, Rob, at a Springfield Chamber of Commerce networking event (of course) who invited me to his new co-invention, InspireNET. Co-invention because he and four other like-minded people invented the group together. It’s the networking group for which I have been looking, and thought I would have to create. Instead, I am creating the first expansion group from the original.

If servant leadership, living your life on purpose, and surrounding your self with great people are things you highly value, take a look at www.InspireNET.org. Read the Inspiration Manifesto. Get Inspired and get Networked all at the same time. Change the world around you by giving more of your value every day through every relationship. Every life has a reason and we all have untapped potential for inspiring others. More on InspireNet.org in future posts.

Dream it, Believe it, Do it

Too often we limit ourselves the very moment we conceive what it is we want. The protective, risk-averse “don’t” and “can’t” conditioning of our youth is still at work in our lives and we seldom notice. This negative conditioning too often causes us to fail before we even begin.

Train yourself to think first, “What do I want that adds value to the Kingdom of God?” Make it specific; get a clear picture of what success looks like and how you will know it. Then ask, “What are the rewards if I succeed? What are the consequences if I fail or fall short of my goal?”

Finally, allow yourself to consider ALL potential obstacles. (only AFTER conceiving the goal and your motivation in the form of rewards for success and the consequences of failure) Ask, “What might keep me from achieving this goal?” Write down anything – everything – that comes to mind, no matter how small or how formidable the roadblock may at first seem. Then, and only then, develop your action plan. Decisive action to overcome your obstacles will be decisive action toward achieving your goal.

Albert Einstein said, “I want to know God’s thoughts; all the rest are details.” God is the source of our dreams. Be true to Him by acknowledging your dreams, and the dreams of others. It’s up to us to handle the details.
